Praised as a monumental romance, a Gone with the Wind for the 20th Century, Beyond Nostalgia is an unforgettable love story that shows us what it is like to love and be loved so intensely that life can never be the same again.

New York teenagers Dean Cassidy and Theresa Wayman live in a world of hard concrete, dark bricks and tough breaks. They both come from dysfunctional families at the bottom rungs of the social ladder, where happiness never comes easy. Theresa's father was shot dead at a bank robbery a few years ago. Dean's father is alive, but he has a mean temper and a nasty tongue that constantly cuts into the heart of his family. And as if all that isn't enough to deal with, Dean's mother is a paranoid schizophrenic and Theresa's is a hardcore alcoholic.

But on a cold, damp night in the spring of 1967, things suddenly look up for the underprivileged kids. It seems fate is finally in a benevolent mood when the free-spirited Dean and downright gorgeous Theresa meet at a high school dance. From there things only get better.

For the next year the youths, who've always been knocked around, bring the light of hope into each other's hearts. Together they manage to beat back all the negativity that keeps coming at them, and they have the time of their lives.

Unfortunately, though, fate is an unpredictable force. And when Dean's better judgement lapses, just one time, the mistake he makes causes Theresa to be pulled from his arms. After that the years slip away and the two lovers push on with their lives the best they can. They both get married, and Dean has two lovely kids, but the sun never sets on a day that they don't think of one another.

Is it possible that destiny might reunite Dean and Theresa someday? If it does, what would the consequences be for them and their families? If it doesn't, could they ever be truly happy again?

I bought Beyond Nostalgia when it was on a special price. I opened it last week, planning to only read a few pages and then go back to it later after I finished reading a different book, but I was immediately drawn into the story. I kept reading and finished it this afternoon. The main character, Dean Cassidy, is an eighteen year boy going to a high school dance at the start of the story. There he meets the most amazing girl, Theresa, whom he soon realizes is his soul-mate, but their relationship goes awry shortly before he is drafted into the army. Part of what makes the book so fascinating is that it starts out in 1967 in New York City. The story follows Dean through much of his life--and it isn't an easy life. I felt for him and wanted him to find happiness. I won't give any spoilers, but I was happy with the way the book ended. The details, the way the characters speak, the music, the descriptions of New York and Florida, the Vietnam War, all give the book a nostalgic feeling, and it was done with skill. It's part romance novel, part historical novel, and part coming-of-age novel. I will definitely read more books by Tom Winton.

Beyond Nostalgia Tom Winton 9781468029284 Books Reviews

I loved this book & can’t believe other people weren’t as thrilled as I was. The story kept me going & I wanted to hear more & from the main characters! Do we ever forget our first loves ?
There were moments in this book where I dreaded what would happen. It is a true story of consequences, a story about how momentary choices can impact a lifetime. It is also a makeshift shows how poor communication damages relationships. I was drawn in by the character, his struggles and choices. I rejoiced when he made the right choice and valued those family members who had been so faithful to him.
Beyond Nostalgia is a very well written book. It captured my attention and I finished the book feeling that it should have gone a little bit more, the author cut it short at the end. Over all, it was an awesome book of true love that comes once in a lifetime, and how a person can mess it up forever!!!! I loved this book and I do recommend this beautiful book to those that like true romance and about what happens in life with these two characters!!
Seen through the eyes of a young man, the reader takes the journey with him in to what he deemed as a disappointing, failure of his life. Tom Winton the author gives you a daunting view from Dean's perspective. At times, I got lost with the battle of postal workers etc, I did see the purpose as a reference to the main character's instability. At least, I think that was what I saw. I believe we all have had a lost love that keeps us holding on, refusing to allow us to let go of the whys and the what ifs. I connected in many ways to Dean, his lose of his first love, his thoughts, feelings and frustrations as a writer. Although,I lost patience with him in his inability to hold down a job; I cheered on his ever loyal and faithful wife with empathy. Not many women would have handled him as well. Good Job, Tom Winton.
I loved this book. Pure and simple. Yes, there's a little language and some situations that are not for kids, but it's realistic. The main characters are captivating, and you grow to care about what happens to them. This is a fascinating journey through life and how one man comes to the realization of what is truly important. Well-written and thoughtful. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.
I have done something with this book that I have never done before ....normally I finish a book , I post my review . Not this time - here I am a day late and still not sure I can put my review into words . I decided I would " think " on this one before I typed one word . I am still not done thinking about this book , but I figure I never will be . This is a " forever " book - I will remember it forever !

I'm not so sure it is even a " book " . I think of it as a " story " . I know , I know ...I say toe-may-toe and you say toe-mot-toe . It is a story , not a romance as it has been billed , but more of a fictional memoir if you will .

Written in a memoir-like format by a 43 year old male as he reflects on life from about the age of 17 or 18 on and then brings the story full circle to present day . It's an adult coming-of-age story about a beautiful first love and the lasting effects .

The writing is not particularly poetic , perfect or grand . The characters are not portrayed in some magically deep manner . Yet it is a beautiful story .

It is a perfect story for anyone who has ever experienced a splendid first love and never forgotten it .
I'm giving this book 4 stars because I cannot give it 3 1/2! It is a well written book and it did hold my interest. My problem with the book was the main character, Dean. There were times I felt like I could shake him. He obviously loved Theresa as a teenager. But what did he expect when he slept with a trollop--then told about it! Men who think with the wrong part of the anatomy should expect to pay the price for their stupidity. Then he never got over his first love, which spilled over into his married life. The person I admired most in this book was Maddy Frances, the person he married. She put up with much more than I would have! He always seemed to be aimless, never sticking to a job, always pining for his lost love, feeling sorry for himself--it got on my nerves. STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOURSELF and make the best of the situation in which you find yourself Thankfully, he found a backbone before the story ended, which helped to redeem the situation. I liked the book OK, I just lost patience with Dean always dragging around in self pity. This is a VERY well written book, well edited. Although this sounds like a negative review, it really is not meant to be because this is a good book. I will look for this author again.
